Capricorn rules the architecture. Bones, joints, the skeletal frame, the knees, the teeth, and the skin that contains the whole thing. This is the structural sign, and it governs the structural tissue — the parts of the body that hold everything else up and that nobody thinks about while they are working.

The knees are the specific territory, and they are worth understanding. The knee is the joint that lets a person kneel, and it is the first thing to go in someone who has been carrying too much for too long. Capricorn's characteristic injury is not dramatic. It is the slow wearing of a joint that was loaded steadily for thirty years by a person who did not think to mention it.

Capricorn's totem is stranger and older than most people realise. The constellation is not a goat — it is a goat-fish, a creature with the forequarters of a goat and the tail of a fish, and it has been drawn that way on Mesopotamian boundary stones for four thousand years. It is one of the oldest images in the sky. The goat half climbs; the fish half remembers where everything came from.
