The arithmetic of a life

Every birth date and every name reduces to a handful of numbers. They do not change. They were set the day you arrived and the day you were named, and they describe the shape of the path, the way a riverbed describes a river.

This page gives you yours, shows the arithmetic, and lays out what each number has meant for the twenty-five centuries people have been counting this way.

✦ Birth name and birth date

Use the name on your birth certificate, every part of it. That is the name numerology reads. The birth date is what you already gave the app; change it here only if it is wrong. If you use a different name today, add it and you will see how the world reads you now, next to how you were made.

Where It Comes From

Twenty-five centuries of counting

Pythagoras, around 550 BC. The Greek philosopher and his school at Croton taught that number is the first principle of everything, that the intervals of music, the proportions of the body and the orbits of the planets all answer to the same small whole numbers. His students were sworn to secrecy and wrote nothing down, so what survives came through later writers. But the core idea is his: each number from one to nine carries a quality, not just a quantity, and the one before the two is not merely smaller, it is a different kind of thing.

Babylon and the Chaldeans. Older than Pythagoras is the Chaldean system, born in the same river valleys that gave us the zodiac. It assigns letters to numbers by sound rather than by alphabet position, uses one through eight, and treats nine as sacred and set apart. It is still used today, mostly in India and among practitioners who want the older vibration. It is harder to learn and gives different answers.

The Hebrew letters. Every letter of the Hebrew alphabet is also a number. The practice of reading a word by the sum of its letters is called gematria, and it runs through the Talmud and the Kabbalah. Two words that add to the same total are understood to share a hidden kinship. This is where the idea that a name has a number first became a discipline rather than a game.

The modern system. What almost everyone uses today is the Pythagorean method as it was organized in the early 1900s, largely by an American teacher named L. Dow Balliett and then by her student Julia Seton, who gave the practice its name. Their system maps the Latin alphabet one through nine in order, reduces everything to a single digit, and keeps eleven, twenty-two and thirty-three as master numbers. That is the system on this page. It is the one the daily columns use, the one the apps use, and the one you will find in any modern book on the subject.

What it is and is not. Numerology is not astronomy. Nothing here looks at the sky. It is a map of cycles drawn from the calendar and the alphabet, and it is best read the way you would read a tide table: not a prediction of what will happen, but a description of which way the water is moving.

Reducing. Add the digits of any number until one digit remains. 1976 becomes 1 + 9 + 7 + 6 = 23, then 2 + 3 = 5. The only exception: if a step lands on 11, 22 or 33, stop there. Those are master numbers and they are kept whole.

Life Path. The most important number, read from the birth date alone. Reduce the month, the day and the year separately, then add the three results and reduce again. Reducing the parts first is what preserves a master number when there is one; adding all the digits in a row can lose it. Born 7 July 1976: month 7, day 7, year 1976 → 5. Then 7 + 7 + 5 = 19, and 1 + 9 = 1. Life Path 1.

Birthday number. The day of the month, reduced. A 7th is a 7, a 25th is a 7, an 11th or 22nd stays a master number. It is the smaller companion to the Life Path, a gift you came in with rather than the road you walk.

Expression, also called Destiny. The full name on the birth certificate, every letter, each converted with the chart. Reduce each name on its own, then add the names together and reduce. This is the number of what you are here to build with the equipment you were given.

Soul Urge, also called Heart's Desire. The vowels of the full birth name only. What moves you underneath, the motive that does not show on the surface.

Personality. The consonants only. The outer self, the first impression, what people meet before they know you.

Maturity. Life Path plus Expression, reduced. It comes forward in the second half of life, usually after forty-five, and describes what the whole thing was building toward.

The Y rule. Y is a vowel when it is doing a vowel's work: when it makes the vowel sound and there is no other vowel beside it, as in Lynn or Bryce. It is a consonant when it sits next to a vowel and sharpens it, as in Yolanda or Kaye. This page follows that rule automatically; most online calculators do not.

Names that changed. A married name, a stage name or a nickname has its own Expression number and it does colour how the world receives you, but the birth name is the one that describes the equipment. Use the birth name here.

The Deeper Numbers

Beneath the core · all read from the name and the date

The six core numbers describe the road and the traveller. The numbers below describe the luggage: what was packed in abundance, what was left out, how the traveller reacts when the road gives way, and the letters that open and close the name. They are computed for you in the Deeper Numbers card above once your name and date are in.

Hidden Passion. Count how many times each number appears in the letters of the full birth name. The one that appears most is the Hidden Passion: a talent so natural that the person often does not think of it as a talent at all, and a hunger that keeps asking to be fed. Two numbers can tie; then both are true.

Karmic Lessons. The numbers that do not appear in the name at all. Each one is a skill this life did not come equipped with and will be asked to learn, usually the hard way and usually more than once. A name with no missing numbers is rare; most people carry one to three. A Karmic Lesson that is also one of the core numbers is softened, because the lesson is already being taught from inside.

Subconscious Self. Nine minus the number of Karmic Lessons. It describes how a person responds in the moment of shock, before thought: a 9 keeps its composure and reaches for the whole picture, a 3 or 4 scatters or freezes, the numbers between hold their ground to a degree. It is the number most visible in an emergency and least visible the rest of the time.

Balance. The initials of the names, added and reduced. When life knocks the person off centre, this is the number that shows how they find the floor again, and what they tend to reach for first.

Cornerstone, Capstone, First Vowel. The first letter of the first name is the Cornerstone: how the person approaches anything new, the door they walk through first. The last letter of the first name is the Capstone: how they finish, or whether they finish. The first vowel of the first name is the First Vowel: the inner motive that leaks out before the person has decided to show it. Each letter carries its number, read with the meaning of that number.

Rational Thought. The letters of the first name added to the birth day, reduced. It describes how the mind actually works when it is working: in straight lines, in pictures, in feelings, in leaps.

The Planes of Expression. Every letter belongs to one of four planes. The Physical plane holds D, E, M and W. The Mental plane holds A, G, H, J, L, N and P. The Emotional plane holds B, I, O, R, S, T, X and Z. The Intuitive plane holds C, F, K, Q, U, V and Y. Count the letters of the full name by plane and you have a picture of where a person's energy naturally lives: in the body and the practical world, in the mind, in feeling, or in knowing without knowing why. The plane with the most letters is the native ground; a plane with none is a place the person has to visit on purpose.

Bridges. The difference between two core numbers. The bridge between the Life Path and the Expression says how to bring the road and the equipment into step; the bridge between the Soul Urge and the Personality says how to bring the inside and the outside into step. A bridge of 0 means they are already aligned; the larger the bridge, the more deliberate the crossing has to be.

The name you go by now. A married name, a chosen name or a nickname has its own Expression number. It does not replace the birth name; it is layered over it, and it colours how the world receives the person day to day. People who change their name often feel the new number come in over a year or two. The card above shows it next to the birth-name Expression so the two can be read together.

        The Karmic Debt Numbers

        13 · 14 · 16 · 19 — the totals that ask for something

Before a number is reduced, the total it came from matters. Four of those totals are read as debts: a pattern carried in that this life is asked to settle. They show up most often in the Life Path, the Expression and the Birthday number, and they are flagged in your card above when one is present. A debt is not a punishment. It is a specific piece of work with a specific reward on the other side.

13, which reduces to 4. The debt of effort. Work that should be simple keeps turning complicated; shortcuts collapse; progress comes only through steady, honest labour done in the right order. The pattern being cleared is laziness or blame in a past cycle. The reward is a capacity to build things that last, once the resistance to doing it properly is gone.

14, which reduces to 5. The debt of freedom misused. Appetite, restlessness, a pull toward excess of every kind: food, drink, speed, risk, people. The lesson is self-command without self-punishment, and the people who carry it well become the most free of anyone, because they have learned where freedom actually lives.

16, which reduces to 7. The debt of the fallen tower. Structures built on ego or illusion get taken down, sometimes suddenly, so that something true can stand in their place. It can feel like a run of losses until it is understood. What it is actually doing is clearing the ground. People who carry it tend to end up with a spiritual life that is real because it was tested.

19, which reduces to 1. The debt of the isolated self. Power held alone, help refused, a stubbornness about doing it all without anyone. The lesson is dependence, in the healthy sense: that strength includes letting others in. The reward is leadership that people actually want to follow.

        The Cycles

        The nine-year wheel · pinnacles · challenges

The core numbers do not move. The cycles do. Every life turns through a wheel of nine years, and inside each year, nine months, and inside each month, nine days. Your Personal Year is the birth month and birth day added to the current year and reduced. It changes on 1 January for most practitioners, on your birthday for some. The Personal Month adds the calendar month to it; the Personal Day adds the day. That is where the Today's Number card above gets its numbers.

        ✦ The nine Personal Years

Pinnacles. Over the nine-year wheels, a life also passes through four longer chapters called pinnacles. The first runs from birth to around age thirty-six minus the Life Path number. The second and third each last nine years. The fourth runs to the end. Each pinnacle has a number drawn from the birth date, and it describes the opportunity of that chapter.

Challenges. Each pinnacle is paired with a challenge, found by taking the differences instead of the sums. A challenge of 0 is read as the hardest of all: no single lesson, so every lesson at once, or the freedom to choose, depending on who is reading.

Life Cycles. Underneath the pinnacles run three longer seasons, called the Life Cycles or Period Cycles. The first is the number of your birth month and covers youth, the years of being formed. The second is the number of your birth day and covers the long middle, the productive years. The third is the number of your birth year and covers maturity, from the mid-fifties on. They change on the same boundaries as the first and third pinnacles, so the two systems read together: the pinnacle is the opportunity of a chapter, the cycle is its climate.

Transits and the Essence. The cycles above come from the birth date. One more comes from the name. Each letter of your name takes a turn, in order, and holds for as many years as its value: an A for one year, a B for two, an I for nine, then the next letter, round and round for life. Your first name walks through the body (the physical transit), your middle name through the mind (the mental transit), your last name through the spirit (the spiritual transit). Add the three letters that are active this year and reduce, and you have the Essence: the inner weather of the year, as against the Personal Year, which is the outer weather. The two are read together. When the Essence and the Personal Year are the same number, the old books call it a year of duality, and it is usually a hard one, because the inner and outer press the same way at once. Without a middle name, the last name stands in for the mind as well.

          The Chaldean System

The older count · letters by sound · the compound numbers

Before Pythagoras there was Babylon, and the Chaldean priests who read the sky also read names. Their system is older, stranger and in some ways more exact. It does not number the letters in alphabet order; it numbers them by the sound each one makes, so letters that sound alike share a number. It uses only 1 through 8. The 9 is held back as sacred, the number of completion, and is never assigned to a letter, though it can appear as a result. And it reads the name a person is actually known by, not the birth certificate, because the sound that is spoken every day is the sound that shapes the person.

How it is read. Add the letters of the name you go by, each with its Chaldean value. The total before reduction is the compound number, and in this system the compound is the main reading; the single digit it reduces to is the outer tone. A compound of 23 and a compound of 32 both reduce to 5, and they are read very differently. The compound meanings below come down from the Chaldean tradition through the early-twentieth-century writer Cheiro, whose list is still the standard one. They are blunt, and some are warnings. The tradition says a warning number is not a sentence; it is a reason to change the spelling of the name you use, which is exactly what many people with these numbers have done.

          ✦ The compound numbers, 10 to 52

            The Universal Cycles

The number everyone shares · and the number of anything

Your personal cycles sit inside larger ones that belong to everybody. The Universal Year is the digits of the year added and reduced: 2026 is 2 + 0 + 2 + 6 = 10, a 1 year, the first year of a new nine-year wheel for the whole world. The Universal Month adds the calendar month to that; the Universal Day adds the day. They set the weather everyone is walking through, and your Personal Day is how that weather lands on you in particular. The card at the top of this page shows both.

The master numbers in a cycle. Most practitioners reduce Personal and Universal years all the way to a single digit, and this page does. Some keep an 11 or a 22 when it appears, reading an 11 year as a 2 year with a charge of intuition and nerves, and a 22 year as a 4 year with a chance to build something that lasts. If your year total lands on 11 or 22 before the last reduction, read it both ways. The 44 is treated by a few schools as a fourth master number, the builder's discipline doubled; most leave it as an 8. A 0 only appears in the challenges, where it means the hardest or the freest lesson, depending on who is reading.

The number of anything. A house, a business, a date, a car plate, a phone number: anything with letters or digits has a number, found the same way. An address is reduced from its digits; a business name is read like a person's name, in both systems. People use this to choose a wedding date, to name a company, to understand why one flat felt like home and another never did.

              Compatibility by Life Path

Which numbers flow together and which grind

Numerology groups the nine Life Paths into three families. 1, 5 and 7 are the mental numbers: independent, thinking, needing room. 2, 4 and 8 are the practical numbers: building, providing, steady. 3, 6 and 9 are the feeling numbers: expressive, caring, giving. Numbers inside the same family understand one another without effort. Across families it depends on the pair, and the table below is the traditional reading. A hard pairing is not a bad one; it is one where the differences have to be named out loud. Master numbers read as their base: 11 as 2, 22 as 4, 33 as 6, with more voltage.
